Help...

Okay... I don't want to sound stupid, but I just don't understand why I would need 450 lbs. of wheat in my food storage for one year. Is this if I have a wheat grinder? Does it last longer then flour? What is the point? Anyways... I'm also trying to figure out what would be the most important things to have (besides flour& sugar), so what are all of you trying to save for food storage?

Hey Erin! Brandon's mom gave us a bunch of info on food storage earlier this year and yes, you will definately need a wheat grinder. She wanted each of us to get at least a hand grinder (that way if there is no electricity we can still use it) but the electric grinders are awesome. You can make a ton of stuff out of wheat- I have a bunch of recipes if you want them!

I'll type up the recipes and e-mail them to you. We haven't actually gotten our wheat grinder yet but I've done some research and if you go to EmergencyEssentials.com they usually have really good prices (the cheapest I've seen anyway). My sister-in-law made us a whole binder on Emergency Preparedness and it has info on everything from food storage to first aid. The next time I'm in St. George I'll come over and show it to you- it's got tons of good info!

Thanks Holley! I would LOVE to see it. I was researching wheat grinders today and saw that soooooo many people say that coffee grinders work really well, but are a fraction of the price. I think I'm going to buy one to see... I can always take it back, right???

That's a good idea about the coffee grinder! I might have to try that too. I have wanted a wheat grinder, but didn't want to spend a lot for one. I just borrow my mom's when I need to. I occasionally make bread with part white and part wheat. If it got bad enought I would just do all wheat since that's what we'd have, or if we ran out of our white flour, but we also bought some white too, although it doesn't last as long as wheat.... That's why they suggest you have wheat with the grinder. Wheat can last for 30 years if you haven't ground it, if you have it goes bad pretty quickly unless you store it in the fridge, white flour only lasts like a year.
